‘Look Again! Heritage at the Doorstep’ is a 40-page record of part of Rathmullan’s built heritage which was recorded in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage in 2010, together with some additional accounts of other buildings of local interest. We spoke to householders whose houses featured in the 2010 Inventory and recorded their accounts of the history of these and other older local buildings of architectural interest. With the cooperation of the teachers in the two local schools, we asked pupils in the Senior Classes to provide us with their own colourful and creative versions of the photographic images, for a collage for the cover of the booklet. We were delighted by the interest of the children in the photographs of the built heritage which they can see around them and particularly enthused by the creativity and enthusiasm of the children in portraying their own insights into their artwork. The householders whose houses featured in the booklet received a copy to promote the conservation of Rathmullan’s built heritage.
Heritage Keepers is a free programme for schools, youth groups or communities that enables them to explore the built, natural, and cultural heritage of their local place and then plan an action or actions to enhance their place. These funded actions included pond building, local heritage trails, signage for biodiversity, oral history projects and local heritage booklets. Heritage Keepers is run by Burrenbeo Trust and is in partnership with The Heritage Council. ‘Look Again! Heritage at the Doorstep’ went on to win a Special Recognition Award for 2023 under the Heritage Keepers programme.
