The Tidy Towns (TT) committee is a small, dedicated volunteer group, dependent on support from other associations within the village including Clean Coasts, Football Club, Cycling Club and Scheme workers as well as our local schools among others. We are also assisted and supported by Donegal County Council (DCC) Waste Awareness officers, Bryson Recycling, Donegal Volunteer Centre, County Councillors and Donegal Local Development Company (DLDC) to name a few. Following on from our successes year on year, we will continue to improve, modify and create opportunities for our community going forward.
At the heart of our TT enhancements is an emphasis on sustainability, reuse and recycle coupled with improving the biodiversity of the village. This ethos will continue, with annual events such as the ‘Big Spring Clean’, Sustainability Fairs and Workshops and further development of our pollinator friendly areas which were very favourably commented on by the TT judges in previous Adjudication Reports.
Throughout the year, our volunteers, supported by DCC and Clean Coasts, do a weekly beach clean and litter pick-ups. We meet at the Pier Building on Wednesday mornings at 10.00am and enjoy a social cup of coffee afterwards. Everyone is welcome to join in or do a quick ‘2-minute beach clean ‘ at any time with the equipment available at our two stands - one near the entrance to the car park and the other at the beach entrance, opposite Pound Street. Other more frequent litter picks and beach cleans take place at various times throughout the year, especially during busy summer months..
The importance of sustainability and climate change has never been more pressing, particularly with rising energy costs affecting everyone at the moment. Changing standards are at the forefront of environmental management, helping businesses and households save energy, save money and ultimately to save the environment. Undoubtedly, we will continue to promote and enhance prospects wherever and whenever possible going forward.
